Directing Video Games 101 Tips for Creative Leaders eBook Brian Allgeier Reviews
As a solo indie game developer who wants to build up a team in the future I've found this book extremely useful. It's an easy and enjoyable read which will be my No. 1 source when it comes to video game directing.
I’m an aspiring game developer and this book was such an insightful read for me! I read the Edition on my phone (Android) and my PC and it looks great, I had no issues. Nearly every tip in this book is a maxim to live by. It covers so many aspects of creating videogames, some of which I never even considered. The tips range from game design, world building, leading teams, storytelling, to sound design and so much more. Heck, there is even a section that goes over directing voice actors! It’s written in such a clear and straightforward way that I want to pin almost every page to my wall just so I can keep the ideas in mind when I’m working in a team or doing personal work. I think I’ll pick up a physical copy just to do that!
A fantastic read for anyone interested in Game Development, whether you're working in a small team or at a large studio it has great nuggets of wisdom that are digestible to read, and easy to reference.
This book does a great job getting around the filler and providing immediately applicable tips and resources you can apply to your own projects.
I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the process of development, aspiring game professionals, or even a seasoned developer; it's great information to have handy; and it's a nice compilation of Game Creation Direction heuristics.
Directing Video Games is the first book directed at creative leads in the game development industry. As the title mentions it contains 101 tips that cover a variety of essential topics for creative leads - brainstorming, game mechanics, character and story development, leadership etc.
Although the book is directed at creative leads it contains valuable information for designers of all experience levels, game design lecturers and researches, and other game developers wanting to learn more about design.
I myself have been working in the game development industry for about 8 years as a Level Designer and I ordered the book as soon as it was available on . I wasn't disappointed at all and I read through the whole book in one evening.
Brian demonstrated his vast knowledge he gained from being the Creative Director on some of the most popular video games and presented it in a clear, concise way.
The book is also available at an affordable price and comes in multiple formats.
Highly recommended!
This is an amazing, concise and beautifully illustrated guide to the world of game developing! Organized and easy to read, it applies to much more than game design - any creative professional can relate to these ideas, especially if you work in teams. Terrific resource!
Recommended to me by Brenda Romero, it's definitely worth your time to look at this if you are starting out in the game industry and take interest in becoming a game designer. It reads more like a cliff-notes/ cheat sheet style for all the important concepts and creative ways of thinking outside the box.
This pretty little book is chock full of great advice for aspiring game directors, and a super-beneficial read for anyone making games or curious about the field. Colorful illustrations accompany 101 digestible, relevant tips that break down a game director's responsibility and offer advice in doing the job well. Garnished with a few cheeky surprises, too. Highly recommend for people passionate about gamemaking.
